Episode IV: The perfect gift

Episode IV: The perfect gift

///

"You're a regalón (big gift)", said an older aunt when I was little and the expression (now, archaic) woke up in me a huge doubt. What did she meant by that? That I myself would be a kind of big gift, that is, a package? In any case, I never wore a red bow and that is the way the emoji of the gift is drawn: in a square box with a bow and tie. When I was old enough to read, I consulted the most revered book in my house, the Small Illustrated Larousse Dictionary, which was barely small because it was a grotesque book with hundreds of tiny pages with blue and gold leather covers where the word "regalón" was defined as "servant with present". It is that gift, in addition to that thing that is given free to another person, as a sign of affection and that strips our soul, also means "comfort or good treatment". It took me years to discover that a young boy is a boy who was raised with love. And that is the best gift that anyone can receive in life (at least according to my aunt, who for Christmas always gave the same present: a pair of towel socks). As a grown-up, I always said that I like to give more than i like to receive a gift, something that gives me a light vertigo. What if I do not like it? What if I already have it? And if it has the price stuck? On the other hand, giving is supreme: time seems to stop at the moment when the other untie the bow, tears the paper and in the eyes a fleeting spark is lit, which can be surprise, joy, disappointment. Giving a gift is a small trip in which we venture to the expectations of the other, which is always an alien planet (although we live in it). For that reason, the perfect gift is priceless: it can be a jewel of exorbitant price, a lamp with the shape of pineapple or the special words of a poem scribbled on a notebook. The important thing is that, whatever it is, that gift means something to someone and gives meaning to the only purpose that can make our lives a continuous parties: be good among us.
